All the modern conveniences

February 3rd, 2007

Since we moved into our new apartment (the first home we have ever owned) I dreamed of a few things. A room to hold my yarn, painting walls a color other than white, a walk-in closet, and a dishwasher.

I did get the first couple:

The dishwasher has always eluded me though… Our kitchen is hideous. We knew this when we moved in but we are going to renovate it, just as soon as we save up enough money. (please!!)

Until then, we have a half-sized dishwasher that I have been too afraid to use since it has stained the wood floor enough already. The dishwasher leaks like crazy and since our place was rented before we owned it, it just was never fixed.

I am the main dish washer in the house, mostly because I do it much faster than Casey and he hates it. I have gotten so impatient doing the dishes and so lazy that they just sit around for days on end- gross. So, I have started being inventive with the dishwasher leaking issue.

Me so classy. Does the job though… 😉

I have been watching Labyrinth as I type this- it was one of my favorites from when we were kids. My brother and I would beg our mother to rent it every single weekend.

So fun- if Casey is bothered by me randomly blurting out my favorite lines, he isn’t showing it.

White walls have always been a pet peeve of mine as well, so although we are still in the renting phase of our lives I was ecstatic when our rental place came with khaki coloured walls and a dishwasher!

Oooh, I love labyrinth! Mike got it for me for my birthday after hearing me talk about it one night at dinner!

As for the home things… it’s all yours, I can’t wait for that feeling. Of course, there is no one to blame but yourselves when your dishwasher leaks. Bummer! Soon enough it will all be improved and you’ll be improving on your improvements!

i love the new place — what a fabulous walk-in closet, and i love the wall colors. we, too, have a sad and horrific kitchen — avocado green, with a dishwasher as old as the hills. it leaks, too, and is an eyesore. but it’s better than me having to do them!
and you have to tell me where you got the book shelf on which the yarn is sitting!

  4. Sara Says:

Love Labyrinth… Sebastian got his name from that movie!

I love the bookcase unit you have for your yarn. Did you build it yourselves?

  5. Carrie Says:

I love your yarn storage! I need to look into something like that. And yay for Labryinth! Dance Magic Dance…

As a fellow dishwashing hater, let me recommend that Dawn Dish Dissolver stuff. You spray it on the yucky stained or caked on dishes, let it sit, rinse it, and everything comes off. Then you wash as you normally would. I love it.

Your place looks soooo good, I love the wall o’ yarny goodness and the closet.

I always loved the Labrynth! Go Bowie!
Your bookshelf looks fantastic–I also dream of walls that aren’t white!

  8. Dorothy B Says:

I am in total envy awe of your closet! My dishwasher tips forward if the door is all the way down and the rack is pulled out too far.

  9. Sara Says:

You know… my comment up there was evidently meant to be a public service announcement of why a person shouldn’t have 4 glasses of wine during dinner at the mother-in-law’s…

I meant to say that Sebastian got his NICKname from Labyrinth… not his name.

Oy. Next time I’ll wait for the alcohol to go away a bit before trying to comment!!

    That closet!!

Did you have that done or was it like that when you moved in?

  11. Kirby Says:

I love Labyrinth! “The babe with the power” “What power”, “The power of Voodoo”, “Who do”, “What”, “Remind me of the Babe.” hahah, i think those are they lyrics.

And who couldn’t love David Bowie in lycra wearing that much eye shadow?!

  12. Jackie Says:

Damn! Kirby beat me to it, I was totally going to sing the babe song. Your closet is awesome, and I’m glad you’ve found a way to make the dishwasher work for you – they make life SO MUCH EASIER. 🙂

  13. Stacey Says:

That list you have for ome ownership? The same as mine, except you need to add “windowboxes full of jasmine so the smell drifts in the windows in the spring” and “a large porch” 🙂 That closet is gorgeous. I have a dishwasher here in my apartment and it kicks ass. We lucked out. I can’t imagine ever doing dishes the old way again.

  14. Sarah Says:

Isn’t Laberynth just the best? I used to watch it all the time as a kid and just recently rewatched it. That and the Dark Crystal. Both movies that are kind of creepy when you think about kids watching them!

Love the movie Labyrinth is one of my favorites too!! I bought the 25th anniversary edition when I saw it at Wally World last year. I couldn’t believe that it was that old!
My boys love the music but my husband can’t stand the movie. So we don’t get to watch it enough.

I am jealous of your bookshelves. I really need some! All our books are still in boxes – it’s so sad we moved last MAY!
