Thinking…

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

Motorcycle Diaries was on tonight and I was hooked on it even after Casey went to bed, leaving me up by myself.

It made me start thinking about traveling, how it can make you re-evaluate everything you know about yourself and the world you live in.

I’d like for us to travel more but in the meantime, I think there are some things that I can do to better myself. I would like to volunteer for a non-profit/ NGO. I’ve been meaning to email my Human Rights professor from the fall semester (awesome class!) to see if he has any contacts in the area. I am going to do that tomorrow- not now when I am tired. (I am a terrible procrastinator… maybe by writing it here I will get off my butt!)

I love me some Pride and Prejudice.

When I heard a new movie version was coming out, I grabbed my copy from the shelf immediately. You have to have the book fresh in your mind so that you can critique the movie, ya know.

I am not a huge Keira Knightley fan… but she does an acceptable job with Lizzie. She does capture her joy and humor but doesn’t do quite as nice a job with her temper, I think, as the BBC version‘s Elizabeth.

She did look awfully pretty in the movie though… as did everyone actually. The sets and scenery was just incredible. You can see a handful of the properties they used for the movie on the website… Pemberly was everything I dreamt it was in my head.

I loved Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett; Rosamund Pike was a serene Jane; and Judi Dench was freaking awesome as Lady Catherine, of course.

I also just happened to catch the BBC version on Biography channel; I haven’t seen it in a while but it was cool to watch it after seeing the new movie version. I think that one is just better because they were able to include so much more of the book with a longer version… and of course… Colin Firth. No need to say more.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to watch the whole thing because my classes interfered… I would run home afterward and catch the last hour of the 2nd and 3rd parts. It has left me unsatisfied though and now I think I either need to just buy the darn thing from Amazon (only 20 bucks! how they taunt me! extra stuff! special edition!) or go see the movie again.

I am a silly girl.

I am, at this very moment, watching the new Martha Stewart show on TLC.

It is impossible for me to turn it off- it is so absurd! During the intro, they showed her getting out of jail and posing with pictures of herself. Wowee.

Everyone in the audience is wearing ponchos- even the poor men.. they are really horribly ugly. (sorry to crocheted poncho lovers!)

Lily Chin is on at the beginning of the show, showing off how fast she can crochet and talk. Is she scary or is it just me? It was stressing me out just watching her!

Martha is now showing David Spade the recipes she developed in prison, using plastic knives and a microwave.

bwahahahaha!!

I am soooo there.

What Not to Wear is touring the country and they are actually coming to “Boston.” (I am sorry but the Northshore Mall is not Boston- ahem.) Click here to get the full schedule.

If Stacy and Clinton are there, I will pee my pants.

eeek! That is this weekend!

Didn’t forget

I did say I was going to put my makeup list here and I didn’t forget!

Casey needs my computer because he is going to upgrade me to Tiger. woohoo!

Say a prayer! eeeeek.

iChat Alternative

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

I recently started using a couple different chat programs at the same time because one of my friends (hi, Loody!) couldn’t use IM at work. It was sorta driving me crazy having two programs running at the same time.

Enter Adium.

This program totally kicks butt and it is free! I am loving all the personalization you can do… it is causing me to waste a lot of time downloading extras off their site. It also has one chat window and puts tabs instead of opening up a whole new one like iChat. This is much better for me so that I don’t spend time anally organizing my chat windows- yes, I am crazy. ;)

Yay!

Okay, I will admit it- the icon is the clincher. The duck flaps its wings when you have a new message! How cool is that?

Sunday night is here again…

Sunday, March 27th, 2005

We had a busy but good weekend. Lots of wedding and family (Casey’s family) stuff. It was a little sad being away from my own family because I know they were all feeling Aunt Beth’s absence today.

In between all the driving around, Casey and I watched an amazing movie on Saturday called Dark Days. It is a documentary about a group of homeless people who formed a community in a tunnel underneath New York City. We actually put off watching it for a long time (one of our GreenCine movies so we could afford to procrastinate), thinking that it would be depressing. It actually was completely great, rather uplifting movie and I am so glad that we saw it.

Bawling my eyes out here…

Have you seen Glory? Ohmygoodness.

I didn’t know Matthew Broderick had it in him! I have studied the civil war a bit but this movie really touched me in a different way.

Oh jeez, here they go… I don’t think I want to see what happens.

Sniff! I need another tissue.

Favorites Films?

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005

Along the lines of my post yesterday, I have been trying to think of movies to add to my queue…

What are your favorite movies? Or movies you haven’t seen in a while and are on your list to re-watch?

To get it started, here are mine:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Elizabeth

Secretary

Princess Bride

Labyrinth

Finding Neverland

Lord of the Rings trilogy

Pirates of the Caribbean

That is all I can think of for now. I will update this post if I think of any others!

*updated*

The Fifth Element

The Matrix (3rd sucked!!!)

Neverending Story

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

(How could I have forgotten those?!)

GreenCine

I have been trying to think of a solution to a little household problem we have.

I really like to watch t.v. or movies and knit at the same time. I cannot just sit and knit without some other entertainment unless I am doing some really complicated knitting. Reading works too, but I can’t do that while I am doing lace or cables since I have to look at my hands so often.

Casey likes to read and we want to be in the same room so at least we are spending time with each other, even if we are doing different things. That causes a bit of a problem, as I am sure you can imagine. The t.v. is very distracting and he usually ends up half watching what I am watching, and half reading.

He is also not a big fan of the stupid shows that I watch. I can’t really blame him either. haha

I have been talking about joining NetFlix so then I can actually watch a quality movie instead of crap t.v. (or flipping around endlessly looking for something I can even tolerate!)

Casey found something even better! He is a resourceful lad.

GreenCine!

Apparently, it does not have a monthly limit on how many movies you can rent. There are also more independent and foreign films for us yuppies. It also has member reviews, staff picks, articles, interviews, and a recommendation feature.

(Here is a post with more info about why GreenCine is better considered better than NetFlix… Thanks, Casey.)

I guess it doesn’t really solve our bigger problem of the t.v. distracting Casey but at least it will be interesting and cultural instead of brain rotting.

We just signed up, I will let you know how it goes!
