When I moved up here last year, I found this website to be very helpful, especially in describing the neighborhoods:

Obviously some stuff has to do with going to school but most of it is related to living in Boston. I live in the Brighton area and although it’s not the prettiest, I do enjoy what’s around here and being close to Brookline and Cambridge. The rent doesn’t seem too bad in this area either. If the person moving up to Boston is bringing a car from out of state, then they could use a ton of advice! Find an insurance company before you leave and try and work it out before you get here. You cannot get a parking permit before you get MA insurance, plates and registration. I know spots in the Brighton area that don’t require a permit but there are not a lot of these and they could be hard to get. It was a pain to have a car here in the beginning, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like not having to shop at more expensive places and carry everything on the T. I take the T when I need to and drive when I can.
