I recently started a hat for my brother with KnitPicks Swish Superwash--easy care, and I'm really impressed with how amazingly soft and smooth it is! Comes in a variety of classic dude colors.

I don't have any suggestions for anything! What I do have is a lot of love and good wishes for your friend.

I agree with an Alpaca Silk blend. Sometimes people also develope allergies and that it a pretty hypo-allergenic blend.

I hope everything goes well for your brother's friend. Curly Purly has a nice pattern for a f*** cancer hat. It says that on the inside of the brim. She uses a bamboo yarn for hers, but I'm sure you could substitute any yarn of the same weight.

If you really want to make him feel cherished, and you can afford it, try the Fibre Company's Road to China. It is super soft and comes in many scrumptious (and masculine) colors. I made my brother a scarf for Xmas using the cashmere scarf pattern from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Scarf took three skeins, and was so soft and lovely I had to order more yarn and make one for my eldest son, as he was threatening to steal his uncle's from under the tree.My favorite color is Lapis, which seems to shimmer with undertones of teal and evergreen.

Will keep your bother's friend in my prayers. I have a close friend who is about to undergo surgery for breast cancer. Am trying frantically to finish a prayer shawl (pattern free on-line) before she enters the hospital. It means so much for someone to be able to wrap visible evidence of your love around them at such a stressful time. God bless.

Cancer is such an unncessary evil. It's especially difficult when it affects those that made efforts to avoid its rath. I hope your brother's friend finds a way to make through this difficult time with some happiness and comfort. I'm sure your thoughtful gift will help.

I am going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival!!!

We should meet! I live here in MD so let me know if you have any questions. I went last year and had a blast.

Oh, Jess, my heart goes out to your friend...and I completely understand the urge to "do" something.

I would recommend Karabella Aurora 8 - it is amazingly soft but warm, comes in good guy friendly colors and knits up in no time.

I am looking forward to seeing you this weekend!

I agree malibrigo might be a good choice for your friend's hat. Or felted tweed? Too scratchy?

Did you know I have a poncho just like that lady's in the last picture? So warm, even if I do look like a weird blob in it.

So sad. I am sorry to hear that. But I have to agree with one of the other commenters - Malabrigo is just the best...the best. They have some great guy colors. Nice dark green, chocolate, black, the list goes on. On another note, MSW - is it as neat as it sounds? Worth the trip from Michigan?
