Growing Pains

April 26th, 2006

We put an offer in on a condo/ apartment earlier in the week. Our current living space is quite small, around 450 square feet (All you house- owners just gasped. I can hear you!), so it will be so nice to double that space.

We would be able to actually cook together, have barbecues in the little yard, and be able to host friends for movies comfortably. We would be able to fit more than a loveseat and chair in the living room, separate our working and living spaces and have room for a big walk-in closet.

I have already started thinking about a color scheme for our new living room- thinking of basing it on this fabric in tones of blue, taupe and brown:

Fabriclivingroom
But, as always, I am getting ahead of myself. We are not even close to owning the place yet.

Casey’s mom is a real estate agent so she is handling the details of negotiation, which I am very happy about since it is stressing me out and I am not even involved first hand. It seems the seller and her agent are playing hardball so hopefully we will be able to afford it once they are done playing their games. I guess it is just not meant to be if it doesn’t happen… but I know we both will be disappointed.

It is scary to think about living in a new town- the condo is in Charlestown, a part of Boston. The town is a lot different than Cambridge, where we currently live, and that is exciting and overwhelming at the same time. It is closer to my brother and his girlfriend, which is a good thing. (My mom is happy about that idea, of course.)

I am so impatient. I just want to know either way, you know?
Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for us…

Fingers crossed, toes too! Buying your first home together is so exciting, and stressful but SO important. Love you chosen fabric. Must hit the fabric store and get inspired in my home. Have been meaning to paint and redo 3 downstairs rooms. Problem is what color?! Choosing a fabric is a fantastic start, thank you!

Best of luck! I know the feeling - I’m so sick of renting a teeny apartment with no yard too! And of course you will need a dog for that yard . . .

I love that fabric - what a great color scheme!

  5. Maya Says:

It’s no green, but I love that fabric!

I hope everything works out soon. I’m sure it will somehow. Fingers crossed…

  6. Kate Says:

Fingers crossed for you and the boy!!!

I commend you on living in 450sq feet. When you do move you’re going to be amazed that you were able to fit your stuff into that space. My neighbour says our belongings are like gas - they expand to fill our space.

  10. Krista Says:

Hope it works out! Another big step in adult life!

  11. Kim Says:

Fingers crossed and eyes scrunched up in earnest hoping!

Have I managed not to say hi since we played in Cambridge? Hi! Thank you for such a fabulous day (I blogged about it — the sock thing makes me feel like a whole new kind of knitter).

    xo

oh my! i am doing the same thing right now. i think its why i have been unable to eat in the last two weeks. my stomach is totally in knots. i am going through all the pre-approval crap right now (here in IL you have to be pre-approved now to even make an offer…) HOW EXCITING! yay for being adults! ha ha ha!

Good luck! Good luck! Good luck!

  17. Bethany Says:

Yay Jess, I hope it all works out for you. I feel your pain. We currently live in an apartment too. Not that small though, Jeezus. I don’t know how you remain sane. I am constantly running into stuff and covered in bruises from mid-night pee runs. Isn’t it SO MUCH FUN to have a kitchen/dining toom/laundry room/recycling center all rolled into one. People who design apartments are effing nuts.

  18. Lara Says:

ooooooh!!! Is it the same place you told me about? With te roof deck n all? OH I HOPE SO!! That place is sooo cute! Either way, I’m crossing my fingers and sending good jujus your way…

Ooh! Good luck! God, I want to own a place too. No more rent! And to be able to actually paint the walls a color I want? It brings a tear to my eye.

Love the fabric. It’s gorgeous. Let’s hope it works out so you can go with that color scheme.

  23. jes Says:

  28. Andrea Says:

Wow, that’s so exciting! We’re looking for a condo right now so I know how frustrating the process can be. I’m so glad that you found one - Charlestown is wonderful. Hope you got it!

  29. maurene Says:

YAY! you got it! paint party here we come…i’ll bring paint-splattered white overalls, wear a bandana in my hair, and then try to reupholster your chairs with a fan nearby…

  30. Moe Says:

Did I see in comments that you got it?! If so, congratulations!

450 sq ft? We lived like that for years until we bought our townhouse, after a year, we feel like we are already growing out of it. I love, love that colour combination. Dark brown and bright colours (blue, turquoise, pink) seem so warm and inviting.
