P & P

November 18th, 2005

I love me some Pride and Prejudice.

When I heard a new movie version was coming out, I grabbed my copy from the shelf immediately. You have to have the book fresh in your mind so that you can critique the movie, ya know.

I am not a huge Keira Knightley fan… but she does an acceptable job with Lizzie. She does capture her joy and humor but doesn’t do quite as nice a job with her temper, I think, as the BBC version‘s Elizabeth.

She did look awfully pretty in the movie though… as did everyone actually. The sets and scenery was just incredible. You can see a handful of the properties they used for the movie on the website… Pemberly was everything I dreamt it was in my head.

I loved Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett; Rosamund Pike was a serene Jane; and Judi Dench was freaking awesome as Lady Catherine, of course.

I also just happened to catch the BBC version on Biography channel; I haven’t seen it in a while but it was cool to watch it after seeing the new movie version. I think that one is just better because they were able to include so much more of the book with a longer version… and of course… Colin Firth. No need to say more.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to watch the whole thing because my classes interfered… I would run home afterward and catch the last hour of the 2nd and 3rd parts. It has left me unsatisfied though and now I think I either need to just buy the darn thing from Amazon (only 20 bucks! how they taunt me! extra stuff! special edition!) or go see the movie again.

I am a silly girl.

ooh, I can’t wait to see it! I’m glad to hear someone’s take on it.

Hmmm. My reservation about the new movie is that I love Colin Firth to such an extent that I know I won’t be able to help but compare. But I’ll see it anyway. And the DVD… My eyes glaze over.

I love your review, but I probably won’t see it. I couldn’t even get through the book in college. I love me some Sense and Sensiblity, though. One last thing, is it just me or does Kiera have the most put on sounding accent ever?

i’m a big fan of the a&e version myself. it was required watching for my womyn & lit course in high school, though i’ve seen it a number of time since then. i’m skeptical about this new take on it. have you gotten into other jane austen flicks? emma? sense and sensability? mansfield park?

ooooh, I LOVE me some Pride and Predjudice! I haven’t seen the BBC version though. It was on the Hallmark Channel the other night, but I only got to watch the last 10 minutes of Part 1.

    That book is sooo goooooood!

I’ve been worried about this new movie version. Kiera, while good in Bend it like Beckham and Pirates, HORRIDLY over-acted in The Jacket, making me sorta hate her a little bit.

    Mmmmm… Colin Firth.
Thanks for sharing your take on the new version of P&P. I am afraid of Kiera overacting [as Lara mentioned]. The beautiful scenery is tempting, though.

It’s not just that the new Darcy is not Colin Firth, it’s that he’s nowhere NEAR Colin Firth.

What did you think about the ending?
