The Cherry Blossom Shawl Can Bite Me and other stories

March 7th, 2005

The weekend was completely exhausting… Everyone is (rightfully) devastated and the whole experience was totally surreal. I don’t think it will really hit me until the next family event without Aunt Beth- or maybe it won’t… I don’t know.

Here is a cute picture of my family with her that just cracks me up. (sorry- coming soon…)

Now on to the actual reason for this post. The Damn Cherry Blossom Shawl.

I was soooo excited because I finished knitting it on Sunday night. I think I have been knitting that shawl for my entire life.

Then, I tried to block it. Even with the combined help of my mother and Casey, we could not get it to lie flat. AT ALL. In the pictures, it sorta looks flat but it really isn’t. Trick photography. (You can click to make the pictures bigger.)

It also isn’t circular, which you can clearly see in the picture. I am not sure what to do. Casey thinks if we can measure what the circle should be and map that out somehow, we can get it to match up. I am not so convinced. We also will need 3 million blocking pins since every single one of those little points has to be pulled out.

NIGHTMARE!

I hate the Cherry Blossom Shawl.

Here are some other pictures of the wretched thing:

(She looks pretty but don’t be fooled! She is hopelessly flawed.)

The only other thing that I wanted to say is that Casey and I got carded at the movie theater yesterday. You have to be seventeen to get into an R rated movie so she actually thought we looked sixteen!! (Casey was just flabbergasted- yes, flabbergasted- because he hadn’t shaved that day and had stubble! How could she think we were 16? stubble!)

Glad to be back. :)

HA! Jess you got carded you got carded.. now i believe you when u told me that people always think you’re younger too. Now i don’t feel so alone!

Alright that shawl looks gorgeous from where i’m sitting.. but i know what it feels like finishing something that you know isn’t ‘right’. Anyhow believe me when i say that nobody else will notice and they’ll all think its just as gorgeous as i do, so chalk it up to experience and love it anyways! Its really an amazing piece of work that must have (and i guess has) taken forever.

So sorry to hear about your aunt. I’m sending you cyberlove ~~~

Were you planning to frame it or wear it? Looks pretty darned cool to me…

Your definately being way too harsh on yourself. The shawl looks exquisite! No one will never know but you where the errors are, I’m convinced we are all our worst enemys when it comes to knitting.

Hope things are going well with your dad. I know anything that happens with your parents is very tough.

    Getting carded is AWESOME!!
The shawl is beautiful. You could always wear it asymmetrically (spelling?) and then it would look like it was not-a-circle on purpose.

Dude, that shawl is amazing. I know you are a perfectionist but seriously, it looks BAD ASS.

    hee hee, you got carded.

That.Shawl.Rocks. End of story. It is GORGEOUS. You are being much too hard on yourself, you did a kick-ass job.

I always get carded. ALWAYS. When I go out with my 21 year old sister, I get carded, and she doesn’t, people always think I am younger. I don’t even want to KNOW what people muct think when my boyfriend, who is a bit older than I am, and I are out together. I just tell myself in ten years I will be glad I look young. :)

    The shawl is really nice!

And damn, so many many people think I’m younger then I am (the bus-driver, people trying to sell me something). It’s terrible. :)

My husband Wes and I get carded at R rated movies all the time. Actually, here’s something worse: door-to-door salesman rings the bell, and one of us gets it. First thing he says is, “Are your parents home?”

    That’s a bad way to start a sale…

I was having a bad day and after reading your site i’ve cheared up. People always say i look younger too, – around 16-18 and i’m 28 in july! People all barmy. Re xxx
