GreenCine
I have been trying to think of a solution to a little household problem we have.
I really like to watch t.v. or movies and knit at the same time. I cannot just sit and knit without some other entertainment unless I am doing some really complicated knitting. Reading works too, but I can’t do that while I am doing lace or cables since I have to look at my hands so often.
Casey likes to read and we want to be in the same room so at least we are spending time with each other, even if we are doing different things. That causes a bit of a problem, as I am sure you can imagine. The t.v. is very distracting and he usually ends up half watching what I am watching, and half reading.
He is also not a big fan of the stupid shows that I watch. I can’t really blame him either. haha
I have been talking about joining NetFlix so then I can actually watch a quality movie instead of crap t.v. (or flipping around endlessly looking for something I can even tolerate!)
Casey found something even better! He is a resourceful lad.
Apparently, it does not have a monthly limit on how many movies you can rent. There are also more independent and foreign films for us yuppies. It also has member reviews, staff picks, articles, interviews, and a recommendation feature.
(Here is a post with more info about why GreenCine is better considered better than NetFlix… Thanks, Casey.)
I guess it doesn’t really solve our bigger problem of the t.v. distracting Casey but at least it will be interesting and cultural instead of brain rotting.
We just signed up, I will let you know how it goes!

while watching tv, justin spends tons of time on the computer, and i knit..so that works..but when we watch movies we sit together and i have to fight the urge to knit (he gets cranky if i knit instead of cuddling up with him….which i have done..heheh) GreenCine sounds awesome! when I have more money and time I’ll have to check it out!
i too *heart* stupid shows…he’s not a fan either

It’s funny because I just joined Netflix. There are tons of old movies (Casablanca, Citizen Kane . . .) that I really feel that I should see as well as since I’m hopelessly hooked on the show 24 at this point I am qued up to receive all 3 previous seasons. For me, I’m not as concerned over foreign or Indie releases as the two of you are. For me the biggest question was speed of turnaround. From what I can tell from my roommates’ accounts it is almost always the day after they mail out the old dvd. (there is a Netflix Distribution Center in Boston)
Anyway, I’m curious how it will go for you
.
Also I think you should get yourself some Grampy headphones (for those not in our family . . . Primarily due to hearing concerns our grandfather at one time owned a pair of headphones that he would use to watch tv. There are all sorts of funny things to be said about a man who is hard of hearing, with blasting headphones on his ears, who falls asleep at any given time of the afternoon.)

Can I suggest wireless headphones? You can typically hook them up to either a television or stereo, and wander the apartment freely while listening to whatever you like. Plus, you won’t bother whoever’s sitting next to you. Mine have been lifechangers…

I hate supporting big chains, but Blockbuster online seems to have the best price. $14.99 gets three movies at a time, no limits on how many per month, and two coupons per month for their bricks-and-mortar stores in case you’re ever without a movie. Coupons are good for video games, too, which the kid loves.

Ah to have a man who wants to spend time with you, even when you are doing different things…ya’ll are so perfect for each other!

Niel and I do the same thing. We like to be in the same room even if we are doing a variety of things. It’s so “Little House”:). Thanks for the info on the movies.

I actually started pondering joining Netflix this weekend. I don’t have cable, so I figured this would be a good replacement. But now that I know about this GreenCine thing, hmmmm….I am looking into it as I write this…

Greencine looks interesting … I’m thinking Jacob might like it even better than Netflix since they seem to have a better indie selection.
But, I feel your pain on the household problem…we’ve been going through the same thing..

I’ve never heard of this one, good to have the info before I jumped into netflix like I’ve considered. I have the same type of problem with my bf but it’s he who wants to watch silly tv and me who wants to spend time with him even if I’m doing my hw.

I’m on Netflix and I like it. I can’t seem to find time to watch the movies lately is the only thing…

My sister and I are NetFlix gals, and we love it. A friend of mine has been using Greencine for awhile now, and she loves them… so I’m sure you will too

Hi! I like to read your blog, it’s really nice
You could wear headphones. Like my father does when my mother wants to work.
