Day of Books

January 9th, 2005

This morning Casey and I had high hopes of what we would accomplish today. He even made a LIST.

Now, it is the end of the day and I don’t think we accomplished much. Casey did do the laundry, I made dinner and we did clean out our books. Casey pulled all of them out of the bookshelves and we sorted and purged a good amount.

At one point, I didn’t think we were going to make it though. Our books were covering every inch of our living room floor. I had to run in the bedroom, bury my head in the pillows and pretend I was an ostrich.

Getting rid of books always makes me grumpy though. I don’t like seeing them leave, even if I am not particularly in love with the book. I am weird that way. I remember where I was when I read it, who gave it to me, or who I was hanging out with at the time… it makes me sad when I give them away

As we were organizing the living room, I also came to the realization that I have a ridiculous amount of yarn. Yes, I can admit it. I actually need to purchase more storage baskets! It makes me want to load up the fridge, go the the video store and not leave my house for a week- just so I can make a good dent in my stash. Oh, how heavenly that would be.

Unfortunately, it is off to work tomorrow for me. The students are going to be back too. Darnit. This working for a school thing would be great if there weren’t students. Just kidding, of course. They are awesome most of the time.

Going along with the theme of the day, I finished reading a book today. (Gee, I wonder why we were not so productive? haha)

It was a pretty good fluff book and I needed it because I have been crawling along another book and needed a little break. It wrapped up with a nice tidy happy ending and that is just what a girl needs at 10pm on a Sunday night.

Oh I can totally relate to getting rid of books! We were going through our poetry today and have gone through our fiction a few weeks ago. As we have a baby.. and she is amassing her own collection, we have to say goodbye to some of our not-so-favorites. Hope you have a good week! I love hearing about your weekends — full of movies, bands and good food.

i hear you on the books. before moving i purged a HUGE amount of books not to mention magazines. i find it much easier to part with them if i can donate them.

Sounds like a very productive day! In the end you will be happy that you got rid of some books. I am really bad about accumulating stuff like that too, which makes me nervous since I am just here temporarily!

My kids come back to school tomorrow too, so I know what you mean about that. I do love ‘em, but still… Hope you had a good day back!

I hate purging books too but if I didn’t do it every once in a while I seriously think we’d have to move out of our house – they are taking over ;)

I hear ya on the “if there weren’t students” sentiment! I work at a medical school, and the beginning of fall is such a hassle with all the ickle firsties!

    Awww, Monkey and I have that same aversion to seeing books leave our house! We had to have some sort of intervention because the house was being overrun by our books. We have a nice halfway house set up for them in our storage locker a few miles up from our house. =}

I hate seeing my books leave too. It never fails that as soon as I give some away, I inevitably am looking to re-read one of them.

That would be sooo nice to just take a week to watch movies and knit. Darn responsibilities! Are you like that Jonathan book? I had thought about trying it, but the reviews I saw weren’t that good.

I know what you mean about remembering where I was when I read a book or who gave it to me, etc…

I feel the same about getting rid of books – I don’t do well! And clothes? Clothes are hard, too, but I’ve had to SUCK IT UP and just do it. Hooray for you and Casey working so hard!

Weird, books are the only thing I can get rid of…I save EVERYTHING ELSE! I have a pile of books by my bed, and as I read them, I give them to friends (if they’re good) or give them to the thrift store (if they suck).
