The Franken- cake
Ok… so remember the cake that I was baking yesterday into the wee hours of the night?
It turned out to be the ugliest cake that was ever created.
I am completely serious. The darn thing crumbled to pieces when I took it out of the forms… it is a flour-less chocolate cake and so I guess it was supposed to crack and expand when it was baking. I followed the instructions and tried to pat it down to smooth the cracks and, needless to say, it did not work. So, I just covered the hopeless mess in frosting and hoped for the best.
Here it is in all of its glory:
But here is a more honest depiction of the franken-cake:
The picture on the top is of Domo-kun, a Japanese character that Casey likes. I am also no artist- especially with icing. Ah. Such a sense of accomplishment. haha
Here is Casey, being a trooper: (He really looks like he likes it, doesn’t he?!)
Casey was a good sport about the whole thing and gnawed his way through his piece of cake with a gooey smile on his face.
We had a really nice time at dinner at Sel de la Terre, by the Aquarium in Boston. We had an awesome waitress and she gave us suggestions and even let me try a couple different wines before deciding what I wanted. (I am normally a red wine drinker but I feel like trying new things lately… I had a lovely Pinot Gris tonight.) The food was really good…mmm.
Casey also unwrapped his presents this afternoon. I am embarrassed to post a picture of them here because there are so many. In my defense, a few of those boxes are just socks. Okay?!
I spent too much money but I just can’t help spoiling the guy- he needed so much stuff! Oh well, more peanut butter and jelly for us. (oops!)
Well, we are supposed to be on the train to the airport in 5 hours (7:30 am flight!!) so I better finish packing and get to bed. I am hopefully going to be able to post from Bermuda…
Have a great weekend!

Casey totally deserves all the spoiling! It’s hard not to go crazy over birthdays, I completely understand. I can’t believe you’re going to Bermuda! I hope you have an amazing time.

Oh my god–that pile of presents is amazing. I always thought I was good with birthdays but now I realize I’m a pathetic one-good-gift girlfriend and must try to improve by November (his birthday). Thanks for humbling me!

I laughed with the site of the cake. I think that is the only decent thing to do–disguise it. Casey seems so happy that cake or none, he had a lovely birthday. I think the real gift is you!

Whatever else it may be, the cake is definitely MEMORABLE, and that’s a good thing.
And hey, at least you made a cake
We didn’t have the proper ingredients in the house for Rob’s birthday, so instead of a cake, he got cinnamon rolls. Mmmmm.

I love that you put that character on the top! Pretty or not, it looks gooey and good. I love chocolate. What was in all of those boxes (besides socks)? I always end up getting my honey things he ‘needs’ as well, like socks and underwear and then more things we don’t need like books. Good job on the wrapping! Hope you have a great time this weekend…

I am sure he enjoyed the cake and the thought behind it. (BTDT… more times than I will admit.) Besides, with enough frosting any cake can taste great! Cripes… this married for 12 years gal cannot compete with the gift giving that goes on in your house, lucky guy!! Have a wonderful vacation Freckle Girl..

Domo is so cute! My friend used to have that little doll. And wow that is a lot of presents…even if some of them are only socks!

I’ve never seen a pile of presents so big!!!
I’m sure Casey loved the cake -it might not have been one of your better efforts but it really IS the thought that counts! It definitely looks delicious!

mmm. I think the cake looks YUMMY.
That’s a mountain of presents! I love birthdays.
How was your trip? Are you back yet?
