Grafting Disaster

August 29th, 2004

Spent most of the day at work- which pretty much sucks. It was about 90 degrees and ridiculously humid but everyone was in pretty good spirits despite it all. It was good to see some students who had returned and to meet a bunch of freshman. It reminds me why I do this job- the students are awesome. (the parents on the other hand… haha)

I was in a tent for the entire day and I still got a sunburn on my back. Yes, IN a tent. (I don’t call myself frecklegirl for nothing!) Case said maybe there was a reflection off the grass- what a joker.

You may be asking yourself how on earth I got a sunburn covered from head to toe in the red tent I posted about yesterday? Well, I was a rebel and decided not to wear it. I was shakin’ in my boots a bit about it but I just decided that the university would be served better by me not looking like a complete dumbass.

Anyway, I got home today and attempted to graft the shoulder seams of the strappy tank. Let’s just say that 2 episodes of the Most Shocking Moments in Music History on VH1 went by and the tank is still not joined at the top. Grafting sucks. I did the same side about 30 times and it looked like a franken-seam. I am totally frustrated and had to throw the strappy tank in a corner where it will rot until I can face it again.

(In my defense, I only was watching the Most Shocking Moments in Music History on VH1 until I finished the seams… there are a total of 14 stitches on both straps so I figured I would only kill a handful of brain cells. Unfortunately, that was not the case.)

This is what the back looks like now:

For those who have made the tank before, is that what your back looked like? I got a bit confused on the instructions so I flubbed it a bit.

I am actually thinking that the back has a bit more coverage than I thought it would. This is more of a fall tank than a summer one. Also, the yarn that I used is quite substantial so I think it would be too warm for the summer- good thing I am finishing it now, I guess.

Casey made me a little treat- ain’t he cute? I had a craving for milk and chocolate chip cookies. yum!

I am so spoiled. He always give me the best cookies too.

Poor Jess… grafting’s not that bad once you do it about 20 or 30 times, lol. (I had to do it a few times for a few Sophies and a pair of socks - amongst the friends, I am the grafting expert, lol!) Actually knitty.com has a decent article this quarter on it and there are good instructions on it in Stitch N Bitch. If all else fails, just have Casey bake you more cookies and email me! I’d be happy to help out! :)

I got sunburned REALLY bad this weekend too? My legs aren’t even red, they are more like, purple or magenta or something. Luckily, the legs were the WORST part. I didn’t get it too bad anywhere else.

I don’t even know how to graft, since I’m a relative newbie to knitting, but yow on the sunburn (boo!). I think it’s kind of cool you rebelled against the red tent. I want that kind of moxie.

    Hi there,

I made that tank about a month ago and after failing at grafting (I’m a newbie) I just decided to do some normal sewing-type seaming. I.e., I completely improvised and it turned out ok. Later I found the grafting instructions on knitty and they looked really easy to follow. Next time, I guess. I don’t think the back of my tank has that sharp of a V, but who cares, it looks cool!

    Congrats on your engagement!
