Retro Cardigan

January 3rd, 2006

I started knitting the Brilliant Retro cardigan (Winter 2005, Interweave) last week and have been flying away on it. I’d thought about not being a yarn snob and using the Patons yarn that the pattern calls for but the color would be really horrible on me. It turns out there are not many colors to choose from with it either and it looks a bit flashy in person, although the picture makes it look pretty! Too bad!

Anyway, I decided to try out Knitpicks for the first time and decided on Shine & Shine Twist in a ridiculously un-practical bright green color, called Grass. What am I going to do with a green cardigan? No idea whatsoever.

Here is the back that I finished last night- blocking! Went really fast. I did have a hard time reading the row counter in the dark parts of Narnia but these are the sacrifices we knitters make for our projects. This sweater will be a big comfort to me when I am blind at age 35.

I started the first front panel but it seems really skinny! I know it is a close-fitting sweater but still!

Is anyone out there knitting this cardigan?

I’m not knitting that cardigan but I AM using Knit Picks Shine (one of the colors is Grass, no less) to crochet an afghan for a wedding gift. As for the green cardigan? You will wear it with neutrals and look fabulous, I’m sure. :)

PS - I got here from some random series of links that started at Boston.com at least three hours ago. I was psyched to find a metro-Boston knitting blogger. (Say that five times fast . . . )

oh, i think that color will be great. who needs another black cardigan? i haven’t seen anyone else working on this, so looking forward to your progress!

I think that green will look perfect on you. It looks like it is the same color as the minisweater you got at Urban Outfitters and that looked great.

Um, GREEN cardigan?? You and green go together like peas and carrots. That thing will be a staple of your wardrobe before you know it. ;-)

I was also knitting in the dark at the movies the other night, an endeavor you showed me was possible. I think there were some people behind me laughing at my sillyness, but whatever. A girls gotta knit.

I like that cardigan. I may try to knit it myself with that knitpicks yarn, but probably in black. I think the green will be good.

You know I saw that sweater in that issue and all I could focus on is how the model’s boobs look like they’re at her waist in that picture. It’s a weird thing for me to notice, but I kept thinking - she needs a BRA. STAT!

    :p

    not knitting the pattern…

But I do have a question:

Do the women in Interweave NEVER WEAR BRAS? ’cause that chickie’s tatas look like she has to be careful not to tuck them in her pants!

A word from someone who knows: After you hit 30 don’t leave your bra at home. If they can’t tell your age from your face, a quick glance at your droopy boobs and you won’t get the student discount.

You’ll just have to buy a cute skirt or dress to wear with it. Don’t you just hate when you HAVE to go shopping? Haha.

Wow, I love the color, it looks great. And I don’t think a sweater can ever be too tight :)

i’m a big lover o’ the green — especially at the beginning of the year when all i can think about is spring right around the corner. speaking of cute skirts to go with the possibly-problematic green cardigan — check out anthropologie’s spring collection. there are a couple of very cute skirts with green prints which would look lovely on a tall, willowy gal like yourself.

you can totally rock that green. And that sweater is so cute!

I know this is kind of random, but do you ever stitch on your own labels after you’ve knitted something (specifically a sweater)?

    I was just curious… :)

Love the color. I need a green sweater actually. And I totally don’t rememeber seeing that sweater in Interweave…hmmm. Guess I didn’t give it a good enough “once over”.

And I love that you were knitting in the theater. This is actually the first time I have heard of someone else doing that, although I know plenty do.
